Online doctor visits without insurance

Compare the appointment fee with the full expected cost of medication, testing, extra time and follow-up.
The practical answer: A virtual visit fee usually describes a particular appointment, not every service that might follow. Obtain a quote for the visit you need and check medication, tests, follow-up and any membership separately.
Three ways an online visit can be priced
These public US self-pay examples were checked on November 3, 2026. They concern selected non-emergency visit types, not every specialty or a promise of availability for your circumstances. We did not book care or submit a clinical intake.
| Service | Published visit-price basis | What needs separate confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Sesame 1 | Appointment-specific cash price; headline advertises visits from $37 | The clinician, state, service and appointment determine the quote. The page says prescribed medication is not included in the visit price. |
| Teladoc Health 2 | $89 per General Medical visit without insurance | Other services have different prices. Its FAQ describes a visit fee for each provider conversation; ask about follow-up and any separate services. |
| Doctor On Demand 3 | $99 for a 15-minute everyday/urgent-care consultation without coverage | No membership fee for this model. Extending a consultation can cost extra. Psychology and psychiatry have separate prices. |

Ask what the visit price actually includes
Start with the reason for the appointment and the service category shown at booking. A general medical price is not automatically the price of a specialist visit, therapy session or ongoing prescription program. The clinician must decide whether virtual care can address the issue and whether any prescription is appropriate.
Ask whether a prescription, if issued, is simply sent to a pharmacy or whether medicine is supplied within the purchase. Then confirm the pharmacy price. A visit advertised as including the ability to prescribe should not be read as including the medication itself or guaranteeing that a prescription will be written.
Testing is another separate line to check. If a clinician recommends blood work or an in-person assessment, ask where it takes place, who bills it and what it costs. Our comparison of home blood collection and lab visits explains the purchasing routes without selecting tests for you.
Build a visit budget, not just a headline-price list
Use a short written worksheet: visit + any additional consultation time + separately priced medicine + required tests + any later appointment. Enter only charges relevant to the actual service. Leave unknown amounts as questions for the provider rather than filling them with an assumed average.
Two Teladoc General Medical conversations at the published $89 rate would be $178 in visit fees alone. That is a simple illustration, not a recommended visit schedule or a two-visit package. Doctor On Demand’s $99 example covers the stated 15-minute consultation, so an extension quote should be checked before continuing.
Before confirming the appointment
- Confirm that the clinician can serve your state and that the selected service can address the reason for your visit.
- Save the exact appointment fee, scheduled time, included duration and any extension charge.
- Check the cancellation and missed-appointment rules. Sesame’s general terms distinguish virtual and in-person notice windows and have separate membership rules.4
- Ask whether follow-up is a new paid appointment and whether results or a visit summary can be shared with your regular clinician.
- If you are not using insurance, ask the treating provider for a written estimate where applicable. CMS explains the usual self-pay estimate rules5.
Common online-visit questions
Does no membership fee mean all later care is included?
No. Per-visit billing can still mean separate charges for another appointment, medicine or testing. A membership has its own inclusion rules and should be compared separately.
Will an online visit guarantee a prescription?
No. The clinician’s assessment determines what can be provided. A consultation fee pays for the service described, not a guaranteed medication or clinical outcome.
Can this replace emergency care?
This guide concerns non-emergency purchasing questions. If you have a medical emergency in the United States, call 911. Do not delay urgent in-person care while comparing online prices.
