An advertised monthly amount may describe a payment schedule, an introductory period or only one part of a program. Before signing up, ask for the complete payment schedule and the terms that apply to your plan.
1. Separate the payment schedule from the commitment
Ask whether you can leave after one month or are agreeing to a longer term. A plan billed monthly can still have a minimum commitment. For an annual prepayment, check what happens if you stop using the service early.
2. Add the services outside the advertised price
Request an itemized explanation. Depending on the program, some services may be included and others may be charged separately. Do not assume that membership and treatment costs are the same thing.
- Initial assessment and follow-up consultations.
- Any medication or other treatment charges.
- Lab work, home tests or required monitoring.
- Coaching, messaging and additional appointments.
- Shipping, supplies, administrative fees or applicable taxes.
3. Compare the same length of time
Comparison framework
Total for the period = required membership payments + one-time fees + mandatory separately billed services.
Keep optional extras separate, and label any amount that is still an estimate.
Use the same time period for every provider. Show the amount due at enrollment separately from the amount committed over the full period. If insurance is involved, ask the provider and insurer which charges apply to you.
4. Check renewal and cancellation
- Does the plan renew automatically, and at what price?
- How much notice must you give to prevent renewal?
- Can you cancel online, or must you contact support?
- Is a refund available for unused prepaid time?
- Does ending membership also end any separate treatment or service arrangement?
Apply the checklist to provider profiles
These researched profiles show why the cost question changes with the type of service. Follow the source links in each profile and confirm the offer and terms that apply to your own purchase.
| Category | Profiles to explore | Key cost question |
|---|---|---|
| Weight management | PlexusDx plan costs and terms; Strut Health recurring charges | Is the offer a prepaid commitment or a recurring prescription charge, and what happens at renewal? |
| Fitness subscriptions and equipment | FitnessAI subscription costs; JustFit renewal and cancellation; Horizon Fitness delivered equipment costs | Are you buying an app subscription or equipment? Compare the full billing period or delivered purchase price. |
| Testing services | Kitlab at-home test costs; Personalabs lab-test orders | What do the test, sample collection and shipping charges cover, and when does an unused order expire? |
| Online mental health care | Brightside therapy and psychiatry costs | Which care fees, medication charges and insurance payments are separate? |
These are different service categories, not interchangeable treatments. A cost comparison does not establish medical suitability or equivalent care. Read our comparison method and research limits before using a profile to inform a purchasing decision.
A short checklist to keep
Before enrolling, keep a copy of the offer, fee breakdown, payment schedule and cancellation terms. If an important detail is unclear, ask the provider for a written explanation.
